“I knew my mother had little time left, and I wanted her to see me with my licence. She saw me. She is no longer with us, but she saw me.” I heard these words in the graduation video of a new class from Iron Women, Volvo's program training and empowering women drivers in Santiago's RED public transport system.
The sentence stopped me. It made me think of the personal stories, obstacles, victories and losses each of these women carries. For that graduate, the licence was not only a professional qualification; it was a deeply personal triumph with meaning far beyond the steering wheel.
